Will Ciampa Fade to Black?

A video package promoting tonight’s NXT Championship match kicked off the show. The champion, Aleister Black, faces off against the challenger, Tommaso Ciampa, in the main event of the evening.

Adam Cole vs. Sean Maluta

NXT North American Champion, Adam Cole, faced off against former Cruiserweight Classic competitor, Sean Maluta, in a non-title match. Maluta didn’t get completely destroyed, but it never felt like Cole was truly in jeopardy of losing the match either. Cole got the win via pinfall following the Last Shot.

Post-match, Cole got on the mic and cut a promo declaring himself a fighting champion. He basically pulled a Goldberg, asking the locker room who wanted to be next, and Ricochet quickly stepped up.

Ricochet challenged Cole to a match at TakeOver: Brooklyn IV for the title, but Cole said no. Ricochet responded by calling Cole a coward for retreating, but Kyle O’Reilly and Roderick Strong joined the champ at ringside, allowing him to get a bit braver.

That is until the War Raiders and Moustache Mountain showed up and ran the entire Undisputed Era off to close out the segment.

Winner: Adam Cole

NXT Women’s Championship Contract Signing

NXT General Manger William Regal hosted the contract signing for the NXT Women’s Championship match at TakeOver: Brooklyn IV. Regal mentioned that this was a rematch from the finale of last year’s Mae Young Classic, which irritated the champion, Shayna Baszler.

Baszler made sure to advise Kairi Sane, the challenger, that although Sane had beaten her before, things were much different now. Baszler continues to be one of the most despicable human beings on the NXT roster, which is a testament to how good of a heel she is.

Both women signed the contract, so the match is indeed official.

Lacey Evans vs. Tenilla Price

Lacey Evans quickly disposed of Tenilla Price. This match was a total squash.

Winner: Lacey Evans

Bianca Belair Speaks

Bianca Belair was interviewed backstage. She was first asked about the status of the injury that kept her out of last week’s fatal 4-way number one contendership match. Belair reminded the interviewer, and the entire NXT Universe, that she was undefeated since debuting in NXT, which means she doesn’t even need to prove herself any further to earn a shot at the NXT Women’s Championship.

Belair closed things out by saying that as soon as she’s cleared to return, she’s coming for the title.

Candice LeRae Rages

Candice LeRae, while being physically restrained, tried to pick a fight with Shayna Baszler backstage. Baszler played it cool, and LeRae was eventually escorted away.

Aleister Black (c) vs. Tommaso Ciampa

NXT Championship Match

Things started off hot, both Aleister Black and Tommaso Ciampa came out of the gate guns blazing. The action was non-stop, and things went back-and-forth for the majority of the bout, with both men nailing counter after counter on one another.

At one point, Black attempted a springboard moonsault, but Ciampa blocked it, dumping Black onto the floor outside of the ring in the process. The champion was never quite the same after this moment, the damage done to his back was bit too much to overcome completely.

This felt like a real fight, with tremendous pacing, hard-hitting strikes, and a sense of tension that never went away even after the final bell rang.

Eventually referee Drake Wuertz was bumped to the floor, allowing Ciampa to grab hold of the NXT Championship in an attempt to use it as a weapon. Johnny Gargano showed up and stopped him from doing so, but accidentally took out Black with the title in the process. Ciampa disposed of Gargano, hit a nasty facebuster on Black, and got the pinfall victory.

We closed things out with Wuertz placing the belt on a Tommaso Ciampa’s waist. The Psycho Killer is your new NXT Champion.

Winner: Tommaso Ciampa
