Running the Gauntlet…

The 5-man gauntlet match to determine the number one contender for Cedric Alexander’s Cruiserweight Championship took up the entirety of tonight’s show. We’ve broken down each match for your reading pleasure below.

Mustafa Ali vs. TJP

Mustafa Ali and TJP were up first. The two had a rather quick showdown in which we saw TJP working Ali’s left knee from start to finish. Despite attempt after attempt to submit Ali, including the use of a kneebar, Ali got the win via the 054.

Winner: Mustafa Ali

Mustafa Ali vs. Drew Gulak

Drew Gulak came next and instantly went to work on Ali’s left knee. Ali got his ass whooped by Gulak for the majority of this match, which played well to both men’s strengths. Ali can sell better than the majority of the performers on WWE’s roster, and Gulak has a mean streak that very few heels today possess.

At one point, Ali locked in a single leg Boston crab on Gulak while both men were on the ropes, which was awesome. Ali then hit a cross body to the floor, as well as a tornado DDT, before finally being cut off by Gulak. Gulak KO’d Ali when he shoved him from the top rope into the stairs on the floor. He then dragged Ali into the ring and locked in a Gu-Lock on an unconscious Ali to get the win.

Winner: Drew Gulak

Drew Gulak vs. Tony Nese

Tony Nese came in like a wrecking ball and gave Drew Gulak the business, something we’ve been missing from Nese since the Cruiserweight Classic. Drew Gulak didn’t get a lick of offense in, except another Gu-Lock, which got him the win. The storyline was simple, yet beautiful. Nese was too emotional to just take the victory and move on to the next matchup, and it cost him in the end.

Winner: Drew Gulak

Drew Gulak vs. Kalisto

Drew Gulak refused to enter the ring before the match began, allowing him to recover a bit before going to battle with Kalisto. Eventually the two locked up, but the turning point occurred early on when Kalisto went for a dive to the floor but crashed violently into the barricade. Gulak followed up with another attempted Gu-Lock, but Kalisto countered it into a Salida Del Sol for the win.

After the match, Cedric Alexander came on stage and gave Kalisto a standing ovation. The two will meet for the Cruiserweight Title on Friday at the Greatest Royal Rumble.

Winner: Kalisto
