Io Shirai Battles Candice LeRae

Many women have been on the trail to the NXT Women’s Championship as of late, including Io Shirai and Candice LeRae, who have not only been after Shayna Baszler but also each other, as Io Shirai’s first target after turning to the dark side was her former ally, Candice.

After being escorted to the ring by Poppy, Io Shirai began her fight against Candice LeRae, who put up a hell of a fight but was eventually outsmarted by Shirai. Io Shirai used Candice’s own offense against her, sending her flying unknowingly into a steel chair as she attempted to end Shirai with a moonsault.

Post-match, another contender to the throne was drawn to the ring by Shirai’s continued beatdown of LeRae. Rhea Ripley ran down, either to rescue LeRae or simply to challenge Shirai, saving Candice regardless of her initial intentions.

Finn Bálor Gives an Explanation

Finn Bálor returned to NXT with a cryptic message: his past would become his future. As he got his start in WWE on the NXT roster, this could have meant a variety of things, but last week, he revealed its true meaning. In the form of kicking Johnny Gargano in the head before flinging him around the ringside area.

And this week, Bálor explained these actions, coming to the ring for just a moment or two to say that he was the top guy, and he was there to prove it. He then dropped one of the coolest lines we’ve heard in quite some time: when he was done with Johnny Gargano, he would be Johnny Watches Wrestling.

Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai Challenge Asuka and Kairi Sane for the Women’s Tag Team Championships

Last week’s episode of NXT featured a match between Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai, and Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir, which Team Kick dominated, winning their shot at the chance to face the Women’s Tag Team Champions, The Kabuki Warriors.

After a hard-fought match, Tegan Nox and Dakota Kai proved to the champs that they were a much stronger, more resilient duo than Asuka and Kairi had anticipated.

Rather than continue the battle and risk losing their tag team championships, Asuka and Kairi took the easy way out, Kairi causing a distraction, which allowed Asuka to hit Dakota with the green mist, in turn giving Kairi an open shot at her Insane Elbow, winning the match.

And if the end of the match was chaotic, it was nothing compared to what happened next. Marina Shafir, Jessamyn Duke, and NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler came out to send a message to Nox and Kai, drawing out the group of contenders to Baszler’s title.

A brawl broke out between these five women (Asuka and Kairi made a break for it beforehand), along with Rhea Ripley, Io Shirai, Candice LeRae, and Bianca Belair. When the entire women’s locker room had emptied into the arena, William Regal had seen enough, declaring the first-ever Women’s WarGames match for the upcoming TakeOver event.

Tyler Bate Steps Up Against Cameron Grimes

In one of the shorter, but no less exciting matches of the show, Tyler Bate took on breakout tournament competitor Cameron Grimes.

Tyler Bate took Cameron Grimes to the absolute limit, but in the end, a distraction from Killian Dain would give Grimes the win with his Cave In finisher.

It is unclear whether Killian Dain has intentions of assisting Cameron Grimes in his matches or Grimes just happens to benefit from Dain’s actions repeatedly, but this time, Dain was out to send a message to Pete Dunne.

In classic villain fashion, Killian Dain went after Dunne’s best friend, Tyler Bate, since he was unable to get his hands on The Bruiserweight himself at that moment. After pummeling Tyler Bate, Killian screamed for him to remind his friend that they had unfinished business, surely setting up a match between Dain and Dunne in the near future.

Keith Lee and Matt Riddle Take On Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish

In an effort to teach The Undisputed Era a lesson for their unsportsmanlike conduct, Keith Lee teamed up with Matt Riddle to take on Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish.

The interactions between Keith Lee and the Era duo were some of the most entertaining of the match, with Keith Lee brushing aside every bit of offense Kyle and Bobby could throw at him.

Matt Riddle got a few hot tags, providing a fantastic partner for Keith Lee and demonstrating to Lee that he had chosen well. But when Adam Cole and Roderick Strong caused a distraction, Keith Lee was forced to leave his partner alone against a 2-on-1 attack, and Undisputed Era took the win.

And, of course, this wasn’t enough for the Era, who began beating Lee and Riddle down post-match until Tommaso Ciampa interrupted. After chasing Adam Cole and his cohorts out of the ring, Tommaso Ciampa announced to Goldie (the NXT Championship) that he would be coming for it, but first, he had to go to war, laying the groundwork for another match at November’s WarGames event.
