The New Day (c) vs. Rusev Day
SmackDown Live Tag Team Championship Match
Despite the pre-match antics (including a Vince McMahon impression and a throat clearing battle), both The New Day and Rusev Day were very serious about going home with the titles. Big E and Kofi Kingston represented New Day while Xavier Woods stood at ringside, tossing pancakes at Lana every now and then.
The New Day fought hard but struggled to put Rusev Day away, even after a gnarly electric chair/double stomp combo from Kingston. English nearly got the victory for his team by locking in the Accolade on Kingston, but Kofi escaped, hit the Trouble in Paradise, and won the match, retaining the titles for his team in the process.
Winner: The New Day
Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton
Hell in a Cell Match
Both Hardy and Orton are crazy enough to do just about anything and to say they lived up to this expectation would be an understatement. This match was positively brutal. They wasted little time in retrieving foreign objects from beneath the ring, and a particularly nasty moment occurred when Randy Orton grabbed a screwdriver and literally nearly tore Hardy’s earlobe in half with it. Honestly, if you haven’t watched it and have a weak stomach – skip that part when you do.
Jeff Hardy got his revenge by gashing Randy’s back and leg with a steel chair, but he took things a little too far when he swung himself from the top of the cell, aiming to put Orton through a table. Orton rolled out of the way at the last second and Hardy appeared to knock himself out. The referee screamed for the cell to be lifted so EMTs could reach Hardy, but Orton pinned him and demanded the referee count first. The finishing sequence was so vicious that the crowd was completely silent when it was over.
Winner: Randy Orton
Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Becky Lynch
SmackDown Women’s Championship Match
Unfortunately for these ladies, pretty much anything following that Hell in a Cell match was going to seem vanilla; it didn’t help that they took quite a while to get things going. They picked up steam when Charlotte Flair attempted a moonsault and each woman gained a near fall. To our surprise (but not disappointment), Becky Lynch managed to pin Charlotte for the victory after reversing a spear into a DDT, becoming the new SmackDown Live Women’s Champion. Charlotte Flair tried to raise Lynch’s hand in celebration, but Becky was having none of it and left with her precious title.
Winner: Becky Lynch
Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler (c) vs. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose
Raw Tag Team Championship Match
Ambrose and Rollins started off strong, getting a near fall on Ziggler within the first few minutes. McIntyre and Ziggler came back with a vengeance, however, using every trick in the book to wear their opponents down. McIntyre was eager to get his hands on Ambrose and spent much of the match trying to defeat him personally.
This was a crazy fun match, possibly the coolest moment of which was when Rollins hit a deadlift Falcon Arrow on Ziggler. But no matter what these men threw at each other, neither team could secure the victory. Following reversal after reversal, near fall after near fall, Ziggler finally squeaked out a three count after McIntyre hit a Claymore while Rollins held Ziggler in the air in what was yet another Falcon Arrow attempt, causing Ziggler to fall on top of Rollins. McIntyre and Ziggler may have retained, but Ziggler didn’t even have the strength to walk away on his own two legs when it was all said and done.
Winner: Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre
AJ Styles (c) vs. Samoa Joe
WWE Championship Match
After the ruthless rivalry leading up to this match, it’s no surprise Styles and Joe came out of the gate full speed ahead. Samoa Joe was clearly out for blood, doing everything he could to fulfill his promise to put Styles to sleep. Styles had glimmers of offense, but Joe held control for the majority of the action.
Styles attempted to turn things around, hitting Joe with several big moves, even getting a few near falls, but wasn’t able to put him away. Joe came back with a wicked clothesline, filling Styles’ mouth with so much blood it wouldn’t be a shock if he lost a tooth. Samoa Joe cinched in the Coquina Clutch, prepared to knock Styles out, but Styles rolled backward, technically pinning Joe and retaining his championship. Footage from a different angle after the match showed Styles tapping while pinning Joe, however, so be ready to see a rematch in the near future.
Winner: AJ Styles
The Miz and Maryse vs. Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella
Bryan and Brie quickly got the upper hand in this mixed tag match, allowing little offense from their opponents. As expected, most of the action took place between Daniel Bryan and The Miz. Bryan nearly had the Yes Lock on Miz, but Maryse broke it up, prompting Brie to chase her down. It was at this moment that Bryan lost much of the momentum he had built up and Miz took control.
After a beatdown of Bryan at the hands of The Miz, Brie Bella tagged in and pummeled both Miz and Maryse. She would have won the match, but Miz pulled her away from his wife at the last second. Brie pinned Maryse again, and Miz tried to interfere but was stopped by Bryan. Unfortunately for Brie, Maryse reversed the pin with a roll-up and took the victory.
Winner: The Miz and Maryse
Ronda Rousey (c) vs. Alexa Bliss
Raw Women’s Championship Match
Ronda Rousey came prepared for a repeat of SummerSlam, but Alexa Bliss had a bit more luck this time around (or rather, she got a head start by attacking Ronda’s ribs during the go-home Raw). Not to say that Rousey didn’t do some serious damage, but it was far from a squash match. In fact, Bliss came back quite dominant after the initial smackdown from Rousey.
Ronda had finally had enough when Alexa mockingly laughed in her face and threw Bliss down after lifting her in the air with minimal effort. Bliss looked admittedly less tough when she immediately tapped out to Rousey’s armbar.
Winner: Ronda Rousey
Roman Reigns (c) vs. Braun Strowman
Hell in a Cell Universal Championship Match (w/Mick Foley as Guest Referee)
The tone of this match was set before the first bell when Strowman snatched Reigns’ Universal Championship and held it in his face, and Roman returned the favor by decking him. The savagery didn’t end there, as both men made full use of their strength and any foreign object they could get their hands on.
Roman Reigns was absolutely brutalized by Strowman, who beat him with everything from his fists to a set of steel steps, but Reigns refused to stay down. Strowman’s rage toward Reigns and referee Mick Foley grew as his attempts continued to fail. Reigns shifted the momentum in his favor when he put Strowman through a table, causing Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler to come to his aid. Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose were not going to let the Dogs of War get an unfair advantage, however, and ran down as well.
All four men made their way to the top of the cell and the brawl continued there. Eventually, Rollins and Ziggler fell from the side, through the announce tables. At this point, Brock Lesnar’s music hit. The Beast kicked down the door of the cell and went to work on both Reigns and Strowman, who were still laid out from the earlier table spot. Paul Heyman took care of Foley by spraying him with “mace” and he and Lesnar walked away from the carnage with smiles on their faces.
A new referee showed up and ended the match, meaning neither Reigns nor Strowman was truly victorious, but Reigns did retain his Universal Championship title amidst the turmoil.
